"The Patriot Victory at Kings Mountain"

At 3: pm on October 7, 1780 a battle took place on Kings Mountain South Carolina that changed the course of the American Revolution. 910 Patriot Militia under the command of Col. William Campbell of Virginia attacked and totally defeated a larger Tory force under Maj. Patrick Ferguson of the British army.

After a battle lasting a little over 1 hour, Maj. Ferguson was killed and his entire command was either killed or captured. This led to the retreat of Maj. General Charles Cornwallis and the abandonment of the British Southern strategy to end the rebellion.

The painting features Col. Campbell on horseback at the onset of the battle. Around him charging the mountain are his Virginia Militia giving the Tories "Indian Play" by fighting from behind rocks and trees. Maj. Ferguson can be seen on horseback in the upper left corner starting to assemble his troops.
